只是到了梁武帝萧衍“代齐建梁”之后，江南证据更迭动荡不休。
自古以来，族长之位皆由长房嫡支所担任，盖莫例外。
梁武帝的太子萧统未等继位便早逝，被册封为“昭明太子”，梁武帝却未立萧统的儿子萧欢为“皇太孙”，而是将皇位传给自己的三子、“昭明太子”萧统的同母弟萧纲。其后“侯景之乱”爆发，梁武帝被活活饿死，萧纲继位，即为西梁简文帝。
只是好景不长，傀儡皇帝不好当，两年之后便被侯景所杀，又胁迫萧纲的弟弟萧绎当了皇帝……
及至西魏攻陷江陵，杀梁元帝萧绎，立昭明太子萧统第三子萧詧为帝，梁朝政权终于回归正朔，再次回到昭明太子一脉。
